Our Green Retrofit Grant
August 2010
Council Gardens is exceptionally pleased to announce
the beginning of the construction phase of our Green
Retrofit Program Grant.
This $1,668,000 federal
stimulus grant allows us
(1) to update our buildings
using environmentally friendly green materials and
(2) to replace usable but older equipment in order
to save energy.
The improvements will significantly
decrease our operating expenses.
We submitted the application in June 2009 and
received the funds in July 2010.
With limited funds
available, the awarding of grants was very competitive.
Though about 20,000
properties were eligible nationwide, only 700
applied. Applications for less than 200 properties
are being processed. Council Gardens was in the first ten to
close and begin construction.
The wait and
work were well worth it. With these funds we are
replacing:
- the midrise
roof
- entrance
doors
- floor
carpeting and tiles in the units, hallways and
breezeways
- unit kitchens
- older
refrigerators and air conditioners
- light
fixtures in the corridors, units, and breezeways
- boilers in
the garden buildings
- heating tubes
and thermostats in the garden units
- hot water
tanks
- windows in
the midrise and in the breezeways
- toilets and
vanities.
All of the work will be completed by the middle of
December.
Inconvenience to our tenants will be minimal.
Council Gardens’ general contractor is Merit
Construction.
In addition to our construction, our gardens
continue to flourish and expand, and our garden
murals in the corridors continue to grow.

Council Gardens become green – inside and out.
