Heights to be close to my family and my
friends. Council Gardens turned out to
be the perfect place for me. From the
wonderful staff to the diverse
population, this place suits me to a
tee.
We have a terrific tenants association.
There are tons of programs and field
trips geared to our interests. And the
gardens! Gardening crosses over all our
boundaries. The entire population meets
around gardening. We've grown enough
produce to keep the residents eating
healthy. I can't imagine living anywhere
else. I have made wonderful friendships
that will last the rest of my life.

AFFORDABLE? YES!
As a partner with the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Council
Gardens receives operating subsidies that allow
quality housing at an affordable cost. Rentals are
available for low and moderate income households in
which at least one member is 62 years old, or for
mobility impaired adults over 18. The 2009 income
limit for a one-person household is $36,300; the
2009 income limit for a two-person household is
$41,500.
Rent includes all utilities, except phone. The
tenant’s portion of the rent is determined by his or
her income and out of pocket medical expenses.
Generally, the rent is approximately 30 percent of
the household income. HUD pays the difference
between the market rent and the tenant’s payment.
Owning property or having a savings account does not
necessarily disqualify an applicant from renting a
unit with subsidy.
While Government funds provide significant operating
dollars, foundation grants and donations to our
Friends Campaign help support our life enrichment
activities.
